What are the Outstanding Food Producers Awards?
The Outstanding Food Producers Awards celebrates Kiwis who harvest, grow and make food and drinks. Each year a team of specialist judges assess around 300 products, awarding the best with an Outstanding NZ Food Producer Award.
Champion, Special Award, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded with winning products wearing medal stickers, as an independent endorsement of quality.
Judging Criteria for the Outstanding Food Producers Awards:
The judges allocate marks based on the following criteria.
Product: Aroma, visual appearance, flavour, consistency and quality. Total marks are 85%.
Sustainability: Environmental and Social sustainable business practices. Total marks are 10%.
Brand Story: The story of the brand, where it’s from, sourcing and making. What makes the product special and demonstrates passion. Packaging including graphic design, functionality and innovation are also assessed as part of the score. Total marks are 5%.

We’re excited to announce our Summer Bombe Alaska Gelato Cake won a Bronze Award in the 2022 Inspire+ NZ Artisan Awards!!
The Inspire+ NZ Artisan Awards saw its biggest year yet, with over 1,000 entries making it the largest food award programme in the country. Now the largest competition of its type in New Zealand, supporting New Zealand artisanal producers.
Not only was this year’s competition a record-breaker, but it also brought about changes to the judging criteria. Due to the overwhelming number of high-quality entries, there was no limit on the number of products receiving recognition this year.
How do the Inspire + NZ Artisan Award choose winners?
“In the past, the awards were structured through a process that reduced the number of entries to Category Finalists, a Category Winner and Highly Commended product mentions. From the Category Winners, a Supreme Award winner was then selected,” said head judge and Supermarket News publisher Tania Walters.
“The new criteria saw products judged individually rather than comparing them to what were very broad categories. Products were recognised with a Bronze, Silver or Gold award if they met the development standard. This included analysing the level of consumer demand in the category, degree of innovation, fit-for-purpose claims, visual appeal, price point, packaging, sustainability, shelf-life, mouth feel, taste, distribution and market relevance.”

Island Gelato recently entered 15 flavours into the Ice Cream and Gelato Awards. After winning 13 medals, we spoke to Hannah Clarke, the Kitchen Manager.
Clarke was born and raised in Auckland, living in Point Chevalier, where her parents encouraged her and her brother to play as many ports as they could. This was when Clarke became known for making a cake for every tournament or birthday.
“I quickly became the go-to person when a cake was needed for someone’s birthday.”
Her Nana taught her most cherished baking lessons, which fuelled the creative foodie fire within. Attending schools that didn’t require a uniform meant the first one she ever put on was the chef whites at AUT. She studied for a Diploma of Patisserie at AUT, which was absolute dream come true.

A record number of gold medals have been awarded in this year’s NZ Ice Cream and Gelato Awards.
Chief Judge Jackie Matthews says it’s a reflection of the quality in the industry. “The quality of these locally produced ice creams, gelatos and sorbets is as good as ever, proven by the high number of gold medals awarded.”
“It’s across the board, we saw strong medal results in the Sorbet and the Best of Chocolate Category, they both offered many stand out entries on judging day. What’s more the judges were impressed by the innovation in the Open Creative entries, with twice as many gold medals awarded in this category compared to the previous judging in 2020.”
Judges awarded 189 medals – a record of 61 gold medals were presented, 66 silver medals were awarded and for the first time in its 25 year history the NZ Ice Cream & Gelato Awards have conferred 62 bronze medals.
Jackie Matthews, supported by a panel of 20 judges and 10 stewards assessed 290 New Zealand ice creams, gelatos, sorbets and dairy-free frozen products on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July 2022.
The Awards, run by the NZ Ice Cream Association, have been held since 1997 and are celebrating 25 years recognising Aotearoa’s finest and sharing the results with Kiwi ice cream lovers. New Zealand Ice Cream Association president, President Karl Tiefenbacher is pleased with this year’s results, saying after all the challenges of the past couple of years it’s heartening to see the quality of locally made ice cream and gelato is better than ever.
“Ice Cream and Gelato is the perfect treat for Kiwis to reward themselves at the end of a busy week and as an industry we’re thrilled that we’re giving Kiwis a little taste of joy – which we know is made to the highest quality standards.”
Karl Tiefenbacher says the announcement of this year’s awards is significant because it comes as the Awards celebrate 25 years. “Continual evolution over the past quarter of a century has ensured these Awards represent our evolving industry. For example this year we’ve included gelato in the Awards name, recognising the huge love Kiwis have for gelato and the importance it has in production, compared to when the awards started in 1997.
Fourteen Category Champions and two Supreme Champions; Americold Supreme Champion and Formula Foods Supreme Boutique Champion will be announced at the NZ Ice Cream & Gelato Awards Gala Awards Dinner in Auckland on Thursday 1 September 2022.
